After the blasted British captured Fort Ticonderoga, they thought they were on top of the world. They wanted to divide our states, and thought with their troops they could. They traveled slowly but that was their mistake. This gave us time to gather up and prepare, to stay together and fight as one... It was September 19, 1777 in Saratoga, New York. We were led by the honorable Horatio Gates, he was the U.S. army general and he didn’t go without a fight and he lead a band of misfits with ease. John Dickinson wrote this piece of writing, with one sole purpose! It was a last ditch effort to stop the war, to stop the pain and suffering of our fellow colonists. We wanted to end this before it could expand, a way to extend peace and stop it before it grew. This was after the battles of Concord, Lexington, and Bunker Hill so we could test our options. We wanted to restore peace and even people who disagreed signed it anyway, it was a way to show unity. But Britain couldn’t even give it their time of day! The petition simply declared loyalty and peace, to mend the broken relationship of the colonists and England. The Congress wanted to show and express their feelings on the matter, a quote stated in the document is, “That your Majesty may enjoy long and prosperous reign, and that your descendants may govern your Dominions with honor to themselves and happiness to their subjects, is our sincere prayer.” The king however refused to even dare read it. This started anger, which resulted to war. The king wanted to punish the colonists for thinking this way, for creating an illegal congress and document. It was a sign of rebellion to England and it was not pleasant. England thought they had the upper hand but they were wrong. While the petition didn’t work, it didn’t stop our strides to
