The Pearl Greed

A poor village family finds a great pearl that is going to change their lives forever. But, overtime the pearl changes the father and brings darkness into and around the family. Eventually the pearl changes everything, but not in the way they expected it to. In result, the pearl ends up being a symbol of darkness for the family in John Steinbeck’s novella The Pearl. The pearl functions as the main symbol of the novella and it changes through the novel in order to illustrate the theme of the destructive nature of greed and envy.
In the beginning of the novella, Steinbeck wants the pearl to represent luck and the good things that are yet to come. Steinbeck describes how “Juana [catches] her breath” when she first sees the pearl, while “[Kino] put his head back and howled and screamed with excitement”(19-20). When the pearl is first found, it makes Kino and his family crazy with excitement and makes them lose their breath when they see its beauty and perfection. Kino saw Juana take the pearl, so he “leaped at her… struck her in the face with a clenched fist… and kicked her in the side”(59). The pearl caused Kino to do things that he would not normally do if he didn’t have the pearl. Also, “Kino was in mid-leap… the great knife swung and crunched hollowly. It bit through the neck and deep the chest… Kino was a terrible machine now”(86). Saving the pearl is all Kino wanted to do, so he decided to do anything to save it, even kill. Since Kino and his family decided to ignore the evil of the pearl, the pearl eventually took away the thing they loved the most. The pearl caused them to run away and in result to the, coyotito was killed. Overall, in the final period of the novella the pearls greed and envy caused Kino to hurt Juana, kill someone and also got coyotito
