The Grapes of Wrath is based around the Joad family as they travel to California in hopes for a better life. In order for the family to move to California, they had to sell everything they own to earn enough money for the journey. The objects they had to sell mostly consisted of things they couldn’t take with them such as, horses, wagons and, furniture. For example, on page 97, the men of the family come back from bargaining with sad faces because they didn’t receive the better end of the deal, only making eighteen dollars when the objects sold were clearly worth more. This issue is presented many times throughout the novel as the Joad family travels to California in search of a better life. Throughout the book the Joad family experience many hardships such as, very little amount of money, deaths and, violence. Throughout all of these hardships the family faced one problem that was often expressed through the duration of the book, this was how business was done. An excellent example of this is the banks. Money was tight as long as was the food families ate. All of these hardships are expressed in The Grapes of Wrath, sharing how one family endured the hardships of living in this time period. The Joad family, the family the novel is based around and through the book business is not expressed in a positive way. Although money was tight the Joads never received the better end of the bargain. People always took advantage over selling things or dropping the price when buying merchandise. The families were in such desperate need of the money that they would take anything they could get.
