The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed the lives of thousands of African American people across the country for the better. This influential bill outlawed discrimination based on skin color, religion, or sex. In the book The Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd, the Civil Rights act has just passed, yet the discrimination that has supposedly been eradicated is still present. The book tells the story of a teenage girl named Lily Owens. Lily, is on a quest to find out what happened to her late mother. With the help of her companion Rosaleen, the family's maid, they are slung into a captivating journey filled with good times and bad. The book also has a movie variant that is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The movie is very similar to the book because of how Lily's escapes from her father TRay, the story of her mother, and the overall resolution with her father. …show more content…
TRay is a single father who is hard on Lily, he seems to take out his anger on her. In both the book and the movie TRay makes Lily kneel on grits, which is corn that has been coarsely ground into sharp edges, for over an hour. This conflict between Lily and her father sparks rebellion inside her. In both versions of the story Roseleen heads for town saying “I am registering myself to vote”(Kidd 27). This is a very important piece of the novel and movie because it is a crucial that she goes to register herself. If she hadn’t done that, she wouldn’t have gotten in trouble with the men and ultimately she wouldn’t have ended up in jail. In the movie Rosaleen doesn’t go to jail, they take her straight to the hospital. This detail is minor, however, because she is still beaten and Lily still breaks her out.
