I read The Skinning Tree, written by Srikumar Sen, which was published by Alma Books in December 2012. It is a historical fiction book that contains two hundred fifty six pages. The Skinning Tree is about a boy who must become independent and mature before he is ready. I chose to read the book because of the art on the cover. The color contrast and combination was just very dramatic. I felt like the story was going to be just as good and dramatic, similar to the cover. From reading the book I hoped to learn how much the second World War affected India and it’s people. The Skinning Tree occurs during the 1940’s which was also when World War 2 occurred. Sabby lives in Calcutta, India, but he later moves to northern India, where his new school …show more content…
In this story he shows multiple characteristics. Some that stood out the most to me was that he is shy, timid, and dauntless. Sabby revealed he was shy when he first arrived at the school and didn’t talk to anybody. Over time he made a few friends, but it took time for him to come out of his shell. Sabby was very complicated. It is weird how he can be timid, but still be brave at other times. He was too timid to ask for instructions on making his bed and clean his boots. When his friends were bullied, he stood up for them. After Sabby found out that his grandmother died, he had cried for hours. I admired that Sabby didn’t care if others saw him with his mother. Some sons are ashamed of hugging their moms or giving them a kiss on the cheek when their friends are around. Sabby didn’t care. He let the world know he missed his mom and family. I thought one of Sabby’s flaws was that he didn’t always know how to control his emotions. When he found out he wasn’t going home for easter, he broke several school rules and tried to escape the school so he could run away. Overall, I think Sabby is a happy and …show more content…
I liked that Srikumar Sen wrote in a simple fashion, and that his writing is very easy to understand and made it sound very interesting. When writes about events from the war it isn’t confusing. Usually war is hard to understand for me especially since I get bored sometimes. I would recommend the book to others. I love how the book is simply written, yet the writing is still sophisticated. If you enjoy books with lots of action, I wouldn’t recommend it. The book can get boring at times, and it doesn’t contain much action. I’m very glad that I took the time to read this
