The Transition of a Dystopia to Utopia Everyday people face arduous issues in life that lead to obstacles that cannot be reached unless they push themselves to strive for the better. A scene from a play called The Tempest written by William Shakespeare describes how each character has a different idea of a utopian society where a community is an effective state with people living a fair justful life. In The Tempest, Gonzalo whom plays a virtuous and optimistic character shares a speech of what he depicts as an ideal society, which is known to be a utopia. By looking at a traditional theme of utopianism, one can see the importance of an ideal society, this is important because the characters within themselves create their own dystopia due to their own unhappiness within themselves. In Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, Gonzalo shares a speech of an ideal society that amplifies the theme of utopianism. The theme of utopianism in the play is described as a society where the community is constructed to possess perfect qualities on what is desired to be a perfect world. The play’s theme revolves around power because it arises due to everyone wanting to rule the island and obtain the riches that come along with it. Utopianism matters in the play because of the dystopia everyone faces amongst themselves. In some way, each character craving power shows how he or she is discontent with their own life. For example, Prospero is living in his own dystopia due to being exiled from Milan with his daughter. Prospero obtains control by using sorcery to allow him to control the spirits of the island to do what he pleases.
