The underground railroad was a network of routes and people that helped slaves escape to freedom. The underground railroad was not an actual train, but a group of people who helped runaways from southern states to get to the North and as far as Canada. It was illegal to do this during this time and anyone caught helping a slave could be imprisoned or killed. These people knew the risks and still wanted to help because they knew slavery was wrong.

In the song "Deep River" was a secret wag for the slaes to talk to each other. The song talks about freedom and peace in death and a desire to return to Africa. These songs were sung by slaves working in fields to be spread to different plantations. These songs had codes and sometimes directions to
