In 1812 the fledgling United States declared war on the British Empire and for the second time in its history fought for its independence. At the beginning of the war the US attempted to invade Canada only to be defeated, and after Britain defeated Napoleon in Europe in 1814 it began to attack the United States. In 1814 the capital of the United States, Washington D.C. was burned down by the British. The war continued for another year and it ended in a stalemate, with the peace treaty preserving the status quo.
