These four words would kickstart the race against time for the Westing heirs to find the murder of their eccentric -and possibly insane- benefactor and inherit his 200-million dollar estate. Over the past two months, the sixth-grade students of Mr. Bectel’s class have read the book The Westing Game. Afterward, they watched the movie. The Westing Game novel and film by Ellen Raskin contain many similarities and differences worth exploring. The Westing Game novel’s storyline is similar to the movie but is more complex due to shortened movie time and budget. The novel and movie both start out similarly. In the book, it starts out with the heirs moving into a just-built, premium apartment building with glass chandeliers and 3-inch shag carpet. Also, there was a podiatrist shop in the office, a coffee shop, and the Chinese restaurant was upstairs on the fifth floor. However, in the movie, the building was a run down, a brick apartment building in the suburbs instead of premium condos on the lake shore. In addition, there wasn’t a coffee shop or podiatrist's office due to character removals. The Chinese restaurant was also on the first floor. Secondly, there were also character removals resulting in some readers disliking the movie. The following were removed: Flora Baumbach, Theo Theodorakis, Mr. and Mrs. Theodorakis. Sydelle Pulaski was in the movie but was like she and Flora Baumbach were thrown into a blender and this new Sydelle came out. Sydelle Pulaski was also now not the mistake as she was now the secretary. In the personality sense, she had a dog, didn’t have crutches and cried a lot. Consequently, the two selections are alike and similar in very different ways.
Evidently, the novel and the film of The Westing Game share their differences, but also contain similarities. The book has more characters and different setting while the movie has this new, mixed up Sydelle and is in a city. They both have a similarity in the general concept of westings game.
