Death is inevitable. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston reveals the meaning behind each characters death by reflecting that person’s life onto Janie‘s behavior and decisions. When someone dies, so does a part of Janie. Over time, Janie eventually grows into a new, independent woman, but before this happens, she faces many trials and tribulations. Nanny’s death was more euphoric than it was tragic for Jenny. Jenny and Nanny didn’t always see eye to eye and Janie took a while to find the appreciation for her grandmother that many find almost immediately. Nanny’s sudden death did not only represent the loss of a life, but it also represented the loss of the advice and nurturing words of wisdom she would give to Janie. For Janie, this was an eye-opener, appreciate those who are still here because they can be gone at any moment. Meeting Joe was “ looking over the horizon” for Janie, But soon “the years took the strength out of Janie’s face.” In the beginning of their relationship, Joe and Janie were inseparable, but they soon became distant. Jamie fell in love with Teacake, and everyone else hated him. Janie heard nothing but negative comments like, “all the men she could get, and she gets with somebody like Teacake.” This is one of the reasons why Janie fled town by train for Jacksonville to be with Teacake. This fairytale didn’t last long, Teacake began to hit Janie to prove that he was in control. When Teacake received rabies from a dog and tried to shoot Janie, Janie took the gun and shot and killed Teacake. By killing Teacake, Janie was killing hurt, pain, weakness, desperation, and a submissive attitude. This is where Janie finally finds who she is, and the importance of loving and respecting herself before anyone else, freeing herself from all the hurt she’s
