Fear is a motivation, like a desire, most often based on what the person don’t want, rather than what the person does want. Fear comes to adrenaline, fear can be a person's best friend if he or she know’s how to use it. In the The City of Thief's by David Benioff, who uses a blend of accurate historical evidence and slight exaggeration to tell his story. In the beginning of the novel when Lev and Koyla are in prison because of Lev being a thief and Kolya a deserter they manage to survive because of the colonel. Lev and Kolya are released from the Colonel’s headquarters because they have a quest of bringing a dozen of eggs for the colonel’s daughter's wedding, If they don’t bring a dozen of eggs until the colonel’s daughter's wedding, they will get killed by the Germans and lose their ration card. There journey begins with many problems like the war, cannibalism, and deaf. With all this problem this could lead to fear. In a particular scene. Lev and Kolya are in the whore house. The sex slaves tell a story about Zoya; she is a young girl, the Germans rape her, and at that moment she ran off. The Germans caught her and cut her legs. The Germans assist themselves to stay in the whore house usually at midnight. Kolya is determined that they should stay and wait for an attack on the enemy. Lev is terrified. While they wait, Kolya once again displays his usual cheerfulness and preoccupation with sex because of how Lev is a bit afraid to fight off the enemy. According to Lev, “He looked like he was worried about me, and all at once I felt like crying. The only one left who knew how frightened I was, the only one who knew I was still alive and that I might die tonight…my last friend”(137).
