One theme in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is technology. More specifically how it desensitizes characters in the novel and makes numb. Technology also destroys the emotions of characters. A great example of this can be found in Mildred, Montags wife, and those who surround her. Many characters in the novel are completely void of emotion Ms. Bowles exhibits this when discussing her kids with Mildred. She “‘put[s] up with them when they come home three days a month… you heave them into the ‘parlor’ and turn the switch”’(Bradbury 93). Ms. Bowels treats her kids as an obligato, where as currently if a kid was treated like this child services would be called. Ms. Bowles had her kids only to populate the earth, and doesn’t even care if they hate her. She used technology as a distraction while it completely destroyed her ability to love. After Montag had thrown of the police from catching his scent a “victim was seized by the Hound and camera in… clenching grip. He screamed”(Bradbury 142). The police avoided catching a criminal in fear f loosing their audience, and in turn killed an innocent civilian. Viewers just watched murder on live television because it was entertaining and didn’t even think that a human had just lost his life. While it’s important to avoid censorship, somethings are over the line. While escaping the police Montag was almost murdered. “[Drivers] would have killed [Montag]… for no good reason at all in the world they would have killed [him]”(Bradbury 122). After being familiarized with death their whole lives killing seems easy, and reasonable, just for a ten second rush. A human life was almost taken just because someone could.
