A theme is a general statement that relates to the story and the characters, about a life lesson occurring to the characters, and something the reader can learn. Because of this definition, in the story Thank You Ma’am, the theme most definitely is: acknowledging your sins, and washing them away leads to improvement. While this idea could be taken literally, symbolically it completely relates to the story.
In the story, a kid named Roger stole an older lady’s purse to get money for blue suede shoes, causing the lady to take him to her home and teach him a lesson. While in many stories punishment is what leads to improvement, in this story, Roger learned an extremely powerful lesson and actually had lunch with the woman. Referring back
