How would it feel being in the front line during the war? What if soldiers felt alive instead of fear itself? In the story, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien takes place in the Vietnam War. The story summarizes a young soldier, Jimmy. Jimmy and all of the other soldiers bought the equipments of being prepared for the war. On the other hand, Jimmy is in love with an English major by the name of Martha. Jimmy write and send love letters to Martha. He is madly in love with her, but this love of Jimmy is a one sided love. Martha does not feel the same way toward Jimmy like how Jimmy feels toward her. On throughout the missions, he gets side track of thinking about Martha and not focusing on the mission he is on. The thesis of the novel, “The Things They Carried” of it being fiction has the needs of it being included in the curriculum because the novel contains stories that are not true leading for it to …show more content…
To understand the point, the reader needs to know Jim is confident of making Martha his. Although Martha doesn’t like him, he’s confident to make Martha his of all tries of it being a success or fail. The author wants the readers to understand Jim is determined toward his first love by not letting himself down. He is determined of knowing what to do and not letting her go because he’s determine of making her his. It shows Jim being determined of getting Martha to himself. In conclusion of it becoming the last result, not only Jim shows his love for Martha he also shows love to the soldiers. By wanting to achieve his goals of battling the conflicts on his own, and having the responsibility of taking care of the soldiers on his own of becoming an independent strong leader. It shows the power of love he has for the soldiers of looking out and taking care of
