Usually, a specific quote or a fact would open up this essay, but this isn’t just any essay. This is a reflective essay that summarizes my work as a sophomore writer. As a writer, I can state my writing skills have drastically improved by being able to creating a hook and transitioning through paragraphs. This year I’ve demonstrated my thesis statements are directly to the point and they have organizational flow. In papers such as “Scarface’s Influence” and “The Power of Nonviolence Protesting” all show how my thesis statements are “listed” in sequential order of events. For example, I used writing strategies to explain a feeling of a scene by using metaphors and similes, which helped amplify the feeling or mood in that moment. These writing strategies also helped me improve my storytelling skills by including hints of sarcasm and playfulness in my writing. A point where that happened was in the opinionated essay “ The Power of Nonviolence Protesting”, I included reverse psychology as an opening hook for the essay to show how there is two sides to the story. One of my biggest struggles writing this sophomore year was reminiscing the feeling of a moment at the climax of the situation. To prevent issues like this in the future, I will use unique adjectives and complex metaphors to make the reader feel like he or she is in the moment. This book, along with the other other books I’ve read this year influenced my writing by adding different literacy tools such as sarcasm and irony, which shaped my essays to be more formal and clever. While writing my essays, I also strengthened the speed of my reading and creating the habit of listening to an audiobook while I read a book so I don’t miss out on any important details. Fast pace reading also happened to one of my greatest achievements this year because freshman year I was a slow reader. Another achievement I’m proud of this year was becoming knowledgeable of valid sources to back up my interpretation of a controversial viewpoint on “Scarface’s Influence”, because on previous research papers I had a tendency of using unreliable sources.
