Thomas Paine, the author of “Common Sense,” was a Patriot in the American Revelution. In 1776, citizens in the American colonies were divided into three different categories. The first was a Patriot, meaning individuals who wanted to seperate from Briatian. The second group were Loyalists; people who stayed loyal to Britain and did not want the seperation. The third segment was undecided. Thomas Paine said in his famous pamphlet, “… I challenge the warmest advocate for reconciliation to show a single advantage that this continent can reap by being connected with Great Britain …” Paine is declaring a challenge to those who are loyalist, clearly stating his Patriotism.
