Throwing Rocks at Houses is an autobiography written by Colleen Jones and Perry Lefko. The book outlines the adversity that Jones’ faced while curling and living as a CBC journalist in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Personally, I chose this book because it seemed to be really interesting and had a direct connection to a city down the road from Acadia University. Being from Ottawa, I did not have much local history or have any prior knowledge to the surrounding “celebrities” or stories. I thought it would be a great choice to better my local historical knowledge, being here for the next four years, I thought it would be a good idea to read up on the local heritage and news.

Jones’ family is one that follows the same pattern and stays in the same rhythm, which consists of waking up, brushing teeth, walking the dog, have a cup of coffee and get to work on time. Being in this consent circle, she forgets to stop and appreciate little achievements or ever-so important moments. On December 10, 2010 Colleen Jones was living her normal routine and attending the local farmers market; she went to her son, Luke’s curling practice. While on the ice coaching the team, nausea, dizziness and constant sway began to set it, she then rushed home, climbed into bed and her husband; Scott — worried and anxious called the 811 number to determine if he needed to call an ambulance. The call lasted seconds. Colleen was rushed into hospital and the entire process going by so quickly, she finally “came too” and observed her surrounding discovering she was hooked up to IV bags. Still in a small daze, she overheard the doctors discussing what the issue might be; she heard two words that forever changed her life — Bacterial
