The first connection in the book to america's history is the Jim Crow laws in To Kill a Mockingbird. Jim Crow laws were unfair rules and laws made by white people to make black people segregated from whites. These laws were thought to be needed mostly because white people were afraid of black people and sometimes blacks were even used for cheap entertainment. Some of the laws were that a negro can not touch a white woman, he could not marry a white woman, kiss a white woman, or have anything to do with a white woman. Also a negro can not say anything bad about a white man or say he is wrong. Punishments for these laws being broken were whites going to the black communities and lynching mass amounts of black people, riots, and even massacres.
