After the attempted lynching of Tom Robinson in the courthouse, misery consumes Scout. Jem recognizes how the event substantially bothers her, and brings her into his room for the night. The following morning, breakfast is served. Aunt Alexandra initiates a conversation with her brother, Atticus, involving the infamous Braxton Underwood. Underwood is known to be a bigoted racist, who “despises negroes [and] won’t have one near him” [Lee 209]; but he proved to be a good man by keeping watch outside of Tom Robinson’s cell door in the previous chapter. Atticus finds this odd that he has made such an effort to supposedly change his ways. While swirling a spoon around in her coffee cup, Scout questions as to why Mr. Cunningham was a part of the
