In the mid 1800’s, immigration from Europe led to the increase of sweatshops on the east coast of the United States. The men, women and children hired to work in these factories spoke little to no English and took the jobs in order to support their families. The conditions were deplorable with limited breaks, poor ventilation, long hours and minimal pay. Although unions began to get involved in this plight, it took a little remembered tragedy, the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company, to bring attention and reform to workplace safety laws.
