Turbans Story

As a young girl, I grew up in a small town in Texas that was predominately white. Everyone I knew went to the same Baptist church as my family. I lived a very secluded life. One day, though, my father received a new job, all the way in California. So we packed our belongings and off we went to this place unknown. It was also a small town; however, it was about 3 times bigger than the town in Texas. One day my brother, sister, and I was walking from my Aunt’s house, to our new home. There was this old man wearing a turban walking towards us. When we saw him, we were reminded of a story that had recently been on the news, back when we lived in Texas. The story showed a video of these men with turbans and the swords they kept in their turbans. We were filled with fear at the sight of this old man, so we crossed the street and just took off running for home. I am sure the old man was thinking, “the ignorance of innocent children.” At least I hope he was thinking that and not, “crazy prejudice kids”. All these years later the faded white paint and old fence around it subtract from that beauty. But the golden pointed domes on top at each corner are beautiful and feels like a piece of India was brought to Garland. Inside, I was surprised to see how simple it was decorated. They had a few odd and end religious paraphernalia, but none of the bright colors I was expecting to see. We were guided to a huge room that I would compare to a dream size, walk in closet, where shelves went from floor to ceiling to hold everyone’s shoes. There were boxes of scarves and bandanas for people who visit and in need of head coverings, which was a requirement for entering the service auditorium.
