Red Hot Chilli Peppers song, “Under the Bridge”, is an in-depth view into lead singer Anthony Kiedis’s time of his life where he struggled with depression and isolation. His message is almost an SOS signal through the song. He is calling out for help so he can be reunited with the band to get over the slump he is in. During the time he was having trouble he broke his sobriety by doing drugs under a bridge. The real problem that he has come to face is not the physical or mental struggle with another person but the mental battle he is having with himself. I believe that the intro chords are one of the most important parts of the song. Opening up with sad and slow lyrics/chords immediately sets the tone for a sorrowful, meaningful song. The main chorus is the piece of the lyrics of the song that are the main idea or feeling. In this case, the tone is affected by the lyrics. Kiedis portrays all of his full and true emotions into four lines. When “ At Least I have her love / The city she loves me / Lonely as I am / Together we cry” (lines 25-28) is sung a whole nother emotional wound is opened. You now see that not only is he missing his bandmates but he is also experiencing isolation on a brand new level. I feel like this lyric represents me in a way that shows how connected you are to the town you live in now or grew up in then.You may just want to run away and escape the norm of everyday life but in the end, it's still your first home. Isolation and depression may be a rough topic to talk about but if you can get someone to put it in a song then maybe someone can connect with it and have a better life. Sometimes all it takes is just knowing you're not alone. My love for this song can not be expressed enough. Everyone in my family had their “own” 80s song growing
