Silver Bridge Collapse According to Wikipedia, Forty-six people were killed in the silver-bridge collapse and another nine people were injured. “The Silver Bridge was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge built in 1928 and named for the color of its aluminum paint. The bridge connected Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio, over the Ohio River” (Wikipedia). This was a highly used bridge serving thousands of cars a day before the collapse. "The bridge was dubbed the 'Silver Bridge' because it was the country's first aluminum painted bridge. It was designed with a twenty-two foot roadway and one five-foot sidewalk” (Silver). The bridge was known as the “Silver Bridge”

“Even though the collapse of the Silver Bridge was a disaster, there were positive aspects to the failure. Bridge inspections are now more routine and in-depth because of the Silver Bridge. Engineers are now more knowledgeable about corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion, which allows better quality structures to be designed and built” (Silver). The silver bridge had many problems due to little inspection done. After the silver bridge collapse, the engineers are now looking for corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion in bridges, so the silver bridge collapse will not happen again. In the words of Heather L. Salasky, “President Lyndon B. Johnson created the President's Task Force on Bridge Safety to investigate the cause of failure, to find funds to build a new bridge in its place and to develop standards to ensure that this would not happen to other bridges in the United States. The National Bridge Inspection Standards were created in response to the collapse. Two years after the collapse of the Point Pleasant Bridge, the Silver Memorial Bridge was opened. President Lyndon B. Johnson took charge to set standards for bridge inspection and the National Bridge Inspection Standards were created because of the silver bridge collapse. “Among the Safety Board’s recommendations to the US Secretary of Transportation were expanding or beginning research programs aimed at such areas as identifying …show more content…
