Sedaris clearly makes a turn from merely telling his story to getting the significance of his personal narrative across in last paragraphs. Sedaris makes a drastic turn by addressing the reader directly “Understanding doesn't mean that you can suddenly speak the language” his usage of the word you takes the focus away from the main character and puts the reader on the spot. This is in order to allow the reader to reflect on what was just read. Yet, Sedaris leads up to this moment in various manners. For instance, in certain parts of the essay Sedaris does not even use words but instead gibberish to create a vivid sensation what he is hearing in the moment and allow the reader to truly becomes immersed in the text.
