A veterinary practice must have facilities for in-patients (even if just for during the day and overnight patients are sent to an alternative practice). Below is a guide to the ideal requirements that each establishment should meet in terms of accommodation available for cats, dogs and rabbits.

General Environment Requirements.

Lighting.
Adequate supplementary lighting must be provided throughout the practise:
• Natural and artificial lighting must be of sufficient standard to enable efficient working after daylight hours
• Lighting should stimulate the patient’s normal behaviour i.e. light during day, darkness at nigh o Natural light from windows is good as long as they are kept secure. All windows which pose a security risk must be escape proof at all times; protected by welded mesh, or made of reinforced glass/polycarbonate/other impact resistant material.
• Artificial lights should have waterproof fixtures installed and florescent lights, that may flicker, should be avoided where possible

Ventilation must be provided to all interior areas:
• It should enable an adequate oxygen supply
• It should not create localised draughts
