The conditions at Valley Forge were bad. Washington’s Continental Army hastily built camp to survive the cruel winter. They made huts that were drafty and they didn’t have enough food or clothing for the soldiers. Some soldiers had to wrap cloth around their feet as replacements for socks and shoes. One out of four soldiers was sick with chills, fevers or worse. Since there was a lack of food some soldiers would have thoughts about stealing food from someone else even from their best friend. One soldier found himself like this and was thinking about taking someone else’s food until he found half a pumpkin and “cooked it upon a rock, the skin side up, by making a fire on it.” The soldiers’ morale was very low from the harsh living conditions
