I learned so much from this event. I learned how strong these young women are after facing such traumatic experience. In the video that was played at the conference it goes on to talk about young women getting raped by their own siblings. It is hard hearing that most of the rapes occurred from acquaintances and mainly from family members. One that stood out to me was this young girl who got raped by her cousin, and how she was forced to be around him and act like nothing happened. She did not say anything for the fear that no one would believe her. Hearing this young girl speak on her experience it is traumatizing having to be raped and still have to be around her offender, especially knowing that there are family. Another one that stood out to me was one victim that took her a while to report the rape due to fear, as most victims do. The detectives were victim-blaming the young women asking her why it took her 6-7 months to come forward with the report. There are different types of sexual violence and when it comes to rape the victims in the video experienced more of forcible rape. Forcible rape forces or threatens to use force to penetrate victim. Most rapes occur from acquaintances, meaning the victim and the offender knew each other. The reports are much higher when the victim knows the offender it is about 75% as compared to a stranger where only 15% goes reported. The consequences of rape varies because not all rape survivors react the same way. Everyone has a different way of coping. The most serve are during the first week.
