I think that the violence was largely avoided in Virginia because of the publics value of education was greater than their belief to not integrate. Several of the other county which decided to close school promptly reopened. One exhibit said “ not as segregationists or integrations but as students who want an education, we ask you to please keep our schools open.” That backed by the firm leadership of Governor Lindsay Almond Jr. which he brought the massive resistant’s to an end. He did this by repealing the Stanley Plan legislation because the resistance had run its course and it was more harmful to Virginias than helpful.
