In the book, Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba was courageous but ultimately a victim of her situation who would have never fought for her own rights if not for the Supreme Court and the influence of her family. Melba did not fight for the right to be let into the white high school, instead she was given this position by the state. Her and the other kids choses were pushed in by certain laws and in Melba’s case her family as well. Once in the school one of Melba’s leading drives to stay in school was her faith in God, this was amplified by her grandma. Had it not been for all of the circumstances lining up in their lives, none of them would have lived through, and fought for the things that they did. In the book, Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba and her friends are portrayed as revolutionary activists when, in reality, they were followers of a revolutionary movement.

She had a huge amount of faith in God, and this was greatly amplified by her grandma. “Now you see that's the reason God spared your life. You're supposed to carry this banner for our people". God was the one she wrote to in her diary every day. He was who she looked to whenever she felt threatened. This gave her a stool to stand on when she was ready to give up. Without her faith in God she would not have made it.
Warriors Don’t Cry, tells the story of Melba, a courageous young woman who despite her courage was ultimately a victim of her situation who would have never fought for her own rights if not for the Supreme Court and the influence of her family. Melba was put in the white school by the state and the decision to go or not was largely not hers. It was amazing and the things they went through despite how sad it is that they had to go through them in the first place.
