Literature is always affected by the time period and circumstances of when it is written. In the Medieval, Early Modern, and the 17th and 18th centuries, British literature highlighted the evolution of their hero-like characters. Heros in early British writings have influenced the standards and culture of men in Britain, and elsewhere, for hundreds of years.
King Arthur is an early Medieval character in British literature who shaped what a hero is like. Some say he appears first in a Welsh poem called the Gododdin. Some would also say his first appearance occured in 830 A.D.in the “History of the Britons.” Early poems and stories with Arthur include: Taliesin: The Chair of the Sovereign,"The Treasures of Heaven",Culhwch and Olwen and "Journey to Deganwy". Most tales kept some common themes. They showed him as a general, around the fifth century, battling Anglo-Saxon tribes.
Legend of Arthur, of course, says he gained his fame by raising Excalibur out of the stone as a boy. A Merlin, who was raising him as a son, set the sword in the stone and inscribed, “"Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is the rightwise born king of all England."” He was fetching the sword to replace his brothers, which had broken in battle. The townspeople had all attempted to lift the sword but were unsuccessful. Some of his great qualities were: Leadership, courage, and service.
King Arthur showed leadership as he unified all of Britain and decimates the Saxons. To unite a kingdom, requires political skills as well as a personage people will rally around. He had the savvy to implement a round table for his knights to discuss issues, plan endeavors, and talk out enmity.
