Our satire presentation is based off of the television sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live. The presentation consists of various sketches, each seemingly unrelated to one another, but in fact all are connected to the central idea of materialism in society. The presentation opens with a two-part skit in which a wealthy car-collector is favored by a squad of materialistic girls. The girls befriend the collector due only to his wealth, as is displayed in the montage following the first scene. However, due to shifts in the stock market, the car-collector loses all his assets and is forced to live in squalor. A short time afterwards, the same squad of girls approach the poor car-collector, but this time look down upon the individual due to his lack of wealth. We renamed it the “Weekday Update”, and altered the introduction accordingly. In this skit, the news reporters outline the latest stories in the news. Each story is connected to the idea of materialism in some way, shape, or form. During the skit, Melissa Hiller plays the role of a materialistic individual and outlines the stereotypical behaviors of such an individual in society. Following the Weekday Update is a commercial by a supposed sponsor of the telecast. The commercial is for a product referenced earlier in the Weekday Update. The advertiser plays upon the materialistic beliefs of society, and fails to give any proper details about the product other than stating that it is “great”. In the final skit, the cereal “Mini-Wheats” is shown at first to be desirable since it is the new trend. Shortly after proving how great the cereal is, two of the girls change their attitudes towards the cereal and move on to liking a new brand of cereal.
