Imagine a world with one religion and one culture. No one’s different from one another, and everyone has the same beliefs. Sounds awful, right? This situation was very close to becoming a reality in the 7th and 8th centuries when the Muslim Arabs tried to invade the capital of the Byzantine Empire, the city of Constantinople. By withstanding constant years under siege by the Arabs, the Byzantine Empire helped shaped and preserve the uniqueness of Western Civilization.
