No single person, place or thing can make up the entire history of a place. In the article “There is No True History of the Westward Expansion” by Robert Morgan, Morgan has a central idea that westward expansion was brought about by the average citizen and that history was not just made up of a few heroic people. There were many people, different places, and various things that were involved in the history throughout the period of the westward expansion. In the Thomas Jefferson's essay “Thomas jefferson’s America, 1801” by Stephen Ambrose, this essay talks about Thomas Jefferson and the process he, and many other people, went through to start the mission of exploring the west to gain knowledge over the land before they start colonizing on it. Before they were able to start the mission they had to go through the process of finding the right people to explore the west. This essay gives many examples of many average people who became very widely known for the things they did, or what they discovered that helped us to better colonize our land. Lewis and clark are a well-known pair that were responsible for the expansion. They held the expedition to explore the land and came back to explain everything they saw. Ambrose includes that, “James Ronda points out, “Generations of empire builders had used the fur trade to secure Indian Allies,’” Not only do Lewis, Clark, Ronda, Jefferson, they all have a part in this expansion, and so do the indians.
