Introduction The film I chose is Captain Phillips. In April 2009, the U.S. containership Maersk Alabama sails toward its destination on a day that seems like any other. Suddenly, Somali pirates race toward the vessel, climb aboard and take everyone hostage. The captain of the ship, Richard Phillips looks to protect his crew from the hostile invaders, and their leader, Muse. The pirates are after millions of dollars, and Phillips uses his wits to convince them to let him live. They eventually get surrounded by police and coast guard and the pirates are forced to release Phillips.

Three Important Historical Points One historical point in the movie is when the U.S. containership names Maersk Alabama was hijacked by pirates from the nation of Somalia. On April 7th, the U.S. Maritime Administration released multiple warnings that recommended ships to stay away from Somalia’s coast, but Phillips did not listen to any of them. The next day, the ships was attacked by the pirates.

Before they arrived, a fire drill was going on. He ordered the crew to continue on as usual even though the boats were only about seven miles away from them. He then faked a phone call to the U.S. Navy disguising his voice to play the role of a navy responder, stating “we’re on our way”. The phone call sent 3 of the ships back, but one remained. That one ship managed to overtake the boar, ultimately capturing Captain Phillips. The last important point in the movie was when the pirates kidnapped Phillips and held him for ransom. The crew offered $30,000 in cash in return for their captain, the but pirates took both the money and Phillips. They put him a lifeboat and set off on the sea. The pirates were eventually surrounded by coast guard and forced to release
