Three different civil rights leaders that stand out are John Lewis, Whitney Young and Roy Wilkins. But first, I will talk about 4 fun facts about the Civil Rights Movement. Did you know that 250,000 people marched with Martin Luther King Jr for his “I Have a Dream Speech.” Secondly, two presidents supported the Civil Rights Movement, such as President Kennedy and President Johnson. According to Brittanica.com, Lewis participated in the Freedom Rides of 1961 as well where he was badly beaten. Finally, John Lewis actually gave a speech at the March on Washington. In fact, he was the youngest to give a speech there. Furthermore, Whitney Young made an impact on the Civil Rights Movement. He was very important not just for the Civil Rights Movement but for all equal rights. He did a lot behind the scenes to help younger black people be prepared for the outside world. Whitney Young was the President of the National Urban League, which fought to end employment discrimination. That helped out a lot with racism and other problems with the Civil Rights Movement. A close friend of Whitney Young, Roy Wilkenes, was a well known Civil Rights Leader. Wikenes helped organize the March On Washington. He was alongside Dr King, Whitney Young and many others. He also participated in the Selma March or Bloody Sunday. He was one of the people who led the entire operation. He was one of the founders of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) which aimed to make America a better place and equal rights for all Americans no matter the color of their skin. Now to do a small recap about it. The Civil Rights Movement is super important. Why do you need to be a member? For justice and rights for many people, it broke the color barrier and made everyone equal. It gave the rights to blacks, so that black boys can go to school with white boys. It's all black and white together. No more judging by the color of their skin. All sorts of new dreams were unlocked. Such as, if a black boy wants to go to any college he wants to attend, he can.
