THE MOCKINGBIRDS The mockingbirds that flutter around in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, represent many unique, different ideas and personalities. The mockingbird symbolizes the innocence being broken and is protected by Atticus’s words stating, “But remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”(103) Miss Maudie follows this up with, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy.”(103). With this statement the mockingbirds are looked at with care through the onlookers eyes not to be harmed verbally or physically, for “they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us” stated Miss Maudie. In ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, she believes good against evil is the main problem that lies in Maycomb.
Boo Radley has innocence and goodness in his heart, he seeks no harm for anyone but is vulnerable to social prejudice. Jem stated, “He dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch”(14), Boo was a victim of Maycomb’s social prejudice. Mr. Gilmer states, “You did all this chopping and work from sheer goodness, boy?” Tom replies, “Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her”(224). With this statement Tom clearly show his goodness and pity towards Mayella. Tom is accused of a crime he did not commit, he is innocent but is a victim of Maycomb’s social prejudice. It was a sin to kill Tom Robinson, for he was a mockingbird.
