Why Did African Americans Join World War One?

World War One was a very troubling time for people when it happened between 1914 and 1918. African Americans went to the battlefield for several reasons, but never was allowed to go into the front line with the others. Farmers often had to leave their lands due to being drafted into the war, making all if there crops die off if there wasn’t anyone to take care of the land. There were weapons that were highly deadly when first introduced to the military and those weapons had caused thousands of deaths. The people were often taking the jobs that were left behind from the men that had left to go into battle. People often had opposing views on what had caused the war to start, and were often conflicted if the war was actually worth the fight. They were tired of being in a war that was going nowhere, but happy for the spread of freedom.
In one way, World War one was successful in that it helped to provide jobs to people who did not find jobs easily. African Americans had opportunities to join the war after the “economic growth encouraged the migrations of African Americans”(“Make Way for Democracy! “) due to the large amount of the population that they had within the country. The “total cost [was] approximately $24,620,000,000 Credits to eleven nations”(“Events & Statistics”) which is equivalent to $594,211,086,000 in the modern world today. There were cities and villages that were completely annihilated due to the forces that were brought on them, making them have little to no chance of survival without help. Due to the war that was raging on, “there were thousands that were dead or missing”(“Events & Statistics”). Those who were missing were to be guessed to have been imprisoned or died on the battlefield without any identification on himself.
