Clay Jensen returns home one day from school and finds a package waiting on his doorstep. He discovers that it is a shoe box containing seven cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, who is dead. Hannah Baker recently committed suicide by a drug overdose. The tapes are mailed from one student to the next who were involved with the tapes

She sent another box of the tapes to Tony, a person in her class, so that if a person didn’t pass the tapes on he would let the tapes out into the town and everybody would know why she committed suicide and they could blame the people on the tapes for it.
