In 1951 the first immortal cells were discovered. They were named HeLa cells. These HeLa cells have led to great scientific breakthroughs in the study of leukemia, influenza and hemophilia. They also helped to develop the polio vaccine. These immortal cells came from a woman named Henrietta Lacks.Henrietta was born on August 1st , 1920 in Roanoke, Virginia. She was a mother of 5 children and an African American woman who had cervical cancer.
When most people think about HeLa cells they don’t usually think about the person behind it, Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta had been getting treatment with radium for her cervical cancer. In one session of this treatment Dr. Lawrence Wharton Jr. had picked up a sharp knife and shaved two dime-sized pieces of tissue from Henrietta while she was unconscious. This is most likely because of their race, age and if they are in poverty and how educated they are. 1 out of every 20 women are misdiagnosed in clinics and doctors offices. Every consent form signed says that there would be constant communication between the doctor and donor of the cells but George Gey did not inform Henrietta or her family until the 1970s when doctors wanted to use Henrietta’s family cells and contacted them. This was done without her direct consent because physicians saw it as a ¨payment¨ for her not being able to pay for her care .Meanwhile Dr. Gey was doing experiments, giving and selling these cells to other scientists while Henrietta was given no recognition. Henrietta or her family was not even aware of these cells till the 1970’s when Henrietta had died in 1951. Today HeLa cells have made millions of dollars, but neither Henrietta or her family has profited of of this. Although the family has been seeking legal
