Why Natural Selection Is Important In Understanding Human-Environment Relations

While there are many concepts that are important to understanding human-environment relations, the most significant would have to be natural selection. Before explaining why that is, understanding what natural selection is will help give a better understanding to its’ significance. Within its’ definition, one can understand why natural selection is so important in understanding the interaction between humans and their surroundings.
It can be difficult to understand natural selection without understanding evolution, natural selection is defined as “the process by which species adapt to their environment” (Futuyama). Essentially natural selection is the explanation for the difference in rates of survival and reproduction. Natural selection explains the cause of change in characteristics or environmental aspects allowing a greater survival or reproduction rate (Futuyama). As the amount of individuals in a population increases, they pass the beneficial genetic traits to their offspring. Natural selection helps explain why some genes are more dominant than others or why reproduction success exists. Natural selection is paramount to the other concepts because of its’ role in nature.
