An average adult needs 7 - 7 ½ hours of sleep every night. However, for adolescents, they need a minimum of 9 - 9 ½ hours of sleep. In the process of puberty, a teen’s sleeping habits can shift naturally so they sleep at a later time. This can be altered even more by the adolescent's choices, but a large cause is their physical changes. The biggest cause of a teenager’s lack of sleep is their schooling schedule. Many adolescents of the ages of 13 - 18 have school at earlier hours which makes them sleep less and get up earlier. Teenagers should have a later start and an earlier end to school for the sake of their health benefits and lack of sleep.

Our school (MMS) starts at exactly 8:15 in the morning, which means that students would have to get up earlier to be on time. For example, from an article called “Sleep in Adolescents” it states, “Studies show that teenagers who get less sleep are more apt to get poor grades in school, fall asleep in school, and have school tardiness/absences” (Sleep…). This fact shows that it is vital for adolescents to get enough sleep so that they can do well in school. This is because sleep has a direct correlation with academic performance in school and at home. Showing as a result, from “Why your Parents should let you Sleep” it states, “Even after you've tried all of these reasons, your parents may just tell you, "Go to bed earlier." But that can be easier said than done” (Benaroch). All across the U.S., adolescents are getting less sleep because of work and school hours.
