A student walking down the street passes a billboard sign with a caption “Got Milk?.” As he arrives at school, he sees that Coca Cola is having a deal on the schools bulletin board. Although people are exposed to thousands of ads during their routines, they may not know their being subliminally influence. The essay “‘Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt:’ Advertising and Violence” by Jean Kilbourne, states that ads can lead but does not cause violence towards women. Most ads exploit women’s sexuality and promote men’s masculinity; however, other ads can actually encourage positive gender roles and attitudes.

This ads features, several fathers, with their children. The fathers each have different skin colors and are either old or young. While the children featured are either babies, toddlers, kids, or teenagers. The ad shows around twenty-two different scenes, each with a father taking of his children. One scene shows a young father brushing his young daughter’s hair. While another scene shows an older father dancing with her daughter at her wedding. Another scene shows a father coming home from work being joyfully greeted by his two young children. Almost in every scene a child says either “dad” or “daddy.” The ad asksed the question “What makes men stronger” and answers it with “Showing that they care.” Many of the father’s in the ad appear to be single or stay at home dads. This ad fights the stereotype that women aren’t the only ones that need to play a motherly role. Kilbourne, states “Ads don’t directly cause violence” but they can contribute to it (Kilbourne 431). If what Kilbourne said is true, then ads who encourage positive things can contribute to positive gender roles.
