The Women of A Lesson Before Dying A lesson Before Dying was morbid and full of shattered dreams. The film begins in a small town in Louisiana, our convicted man is wrongfully accused of murder and given a death sentence. During the trial Jefferson is called a hog, our main character, Grant, a local teacher, is asked to speak with him and make sure he knows he’s a man. There are fights and painful self discovery, but even through all this, it ended happily. This achieved happiness would not have been possible without the women, the true heros of the film. Nearly every woman in A Lesson Before Dying had a huge influence on the men from using connections to simply having a heartfelt talk with someone. They changed the outcome as the cause to cause and effect. Miss Emma is the first we shall discuss. She is a strong, elderly lady, who loves her godson, Jefferson and will do whatever it takes to get what she believes is right. She is a religious woman and wants nothing more than to see Jefferson in heaven with her. She has a huge influence on Grant being able to get into the prison to talk with Jefferson in the first place. SHe is a kind woman, toughened through grief, her husband left her and their children to fend for themselves. She is the one who talks some sense into Grant, and gets him to legitimately try with Jefferson. It takes a fight where she tries to convince him and he disagrees, it takes time, but her words work. She loves Grant, and puts so much effort into their mutual happiness. She also greatly appreciates the letter Jefferson wrote, where he calls her a quality woman, which she is. She is a dedicated woman, and it’s something to look up to,
