These are the policies and procedures: • The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989 – this ensures that children are looked after and safe. They have the right to be protected from all forms of mental and physical violence. It protects children from exploitation or malnutrition including sexual abuse. • Children Act 1989 – All adults and professionals who work with children must ensure that the safety of the child is put first. Parents are included in this. It shows the requirement for: All services to work together and in turn forming an integrated service • Working Together to Safeguard Children 2006 – This is the duties of organisations and how they must work together to safeguard children and young people.
A more recent publication is Working together to safeguard children: A guide to inter-agency working to safeguard and promote the welfare of children March 2015. Replaces Working Together to Safeguard Children (2013). This guidance covers the legislative requirements and expectations on individual services to safeguard and promote the welfare of children; and provides a clear framework for Local Safeguarding Children Boards
(LSCBs) to monitor the effectiveness of local services. • Keeping up to date on policies, procedures and legislation. • Making sure that all staff and care providers are trained in safe guarding and also kept up to date with changed. • Assessing observations to identify additional support needs a child or young person will need (CAF) which is a common assessment framework, this system enables multi agencies to access and add information about children.
Within the school that I work in there is a safe guarding team who you would raise any issues with. They work closely with other agencies to make sure that all children and young people are safe. The school I work in is a special needs school so we have to find other ways to allow the children and young people to be able to understand and communicate where they may be a safe guarding issue.
We also spend a lot of time teaching the young people what is good and bad touch, public and private etc to help them understand what is OK and what isnâ€TMt. This is all aimed at safe guarding the welfare of the children and young people who attend the
