Dogs of WWI In World War One, a new breed of soldiers emerged, the dogs. They could detect a far away enemy or gas attack. They could find wounded or dying on a battlefield without having to even see them. They could pull heavy machine guns or deliver messages. Or just kill rats hat infested he trenches. Most important of all, they were man's best friend in a time when friendships were short lived and the tide of war was erratic and unpredictable. Dogs were smart, kind, and fearless in battle. Dogs helped the military in World War One in many ways, they could do many jobs, committed act of heroism and saved soldiers lives, and they were used in past and are used in current wars. They are amazing creatures and helped sway the tide of war. Different countries used dogs in World War One in many different ways. This shows that militaries have used dogs in wars in similar ways to the ways they were used in World War One and wars after that. Although dogs have been used by militaries for centuries, the first time they were widely used by America was in World War Two. Benjamin Franklin was an advocate for using dogs as weapons without much success. Dogs were mainly used by the US for mascots or special missions, since World War Two they have been used for bomb and contraband sniffing or defusing (Image 2), patrols for enemies, antiterrorism units, guard dogs and protections, and like World War One, companionship during war. World War One was when dogs were first used for sniffing gas because the development of poison gasses. Dogs have helped and have continued to help militaries in wars for many
