In 1607, Jamestown was funded by the Virginia Company to start a colony and bring back gold. John Smith was the leader of the group that arrived and he was smart enough to befriend the Indians but in 1609, an accidental gunpowder burn forced John Smith to return back to England. After his departure, George Percy was the new leader and the colonists had to endure hardships in Jamestown, also known as the “Starving Time,” diseases spread and many starved due to limited food. In fact, some were executed because they raided food from the colonists’ stashes, some will fed on horses and rodents, and others will eat snakes and serpents, and others will even do cannibalism. A man even murdered his own wife and ate her, and he was tortured by his actions.
