9/11 Changes

September 11, 2001 is a day that will never be forgotten. That day the world changed for so many people. It had a major impact not only on the people that lost their lives and their families, but for all of the people watching live on television, the terrorist act that had been committed. Since that awful day, many changes has made. One will discuss some of the changes the fire department has undergone in relationship to building design and construction and to the application of building and fire codes.
Life safety has always been a priority in the fire service, when a firefighter sees a person who needs help or a structure on fire, ones first thought is to rescue that person or run in that house and extinguish the fire. But since 9/11, firefighters have taking a little extra time to observe one surrounding before taking actions that could put one’s life in additional danger. As stated by Corbett and Brannigan 2015, “since the collapse of the World Trade Center situational awareness has been widely discussed. Everyone on the fire ground must maintain a heightened sense of situational awareness” (p. 428). In addition, some major changes to the international codes because of 9/11 include:
