When an innocent young man dies, who is to blame? In A Separate Peace Gene and Phineas should have been best buddies throughout, but jealousy and anger welled up in Gene Forrester. Due to this, one incident turns this story from a happy tale, to one of loss. Gene Forrester caused Finny’s death.

Gene’s feelings towards Finny was the beginning of the end. After Finny said “insert quote here>” (p. #) at the beach, and beat the swim record, Forrester decided they were nothing but rivals. He believes they are “only equal in enmity”(p. #).Some may say that this wasn’t Gene’s fault because we do not always have control of our feelings.
