In the world of the media, Colin Kapernick and plenty of other NFL players’ names have been displayed across headlines. Kapernick, an African American NFL quarterback, decided to opt out of standing for the National Anthem during a football game to protest police brutality against people of color. Since then Kapernick and his followers have received plenty of attention, praise by the organization of Black Lives Matter for finally protesting, and criticism by many supporters of the United States military for being disrespectful. Nevertheless, Colin Kapernick and his allies’ actions can be better understood by looking at history, where many “scientific” ideas were discovered entailing African Americans and people of color were not equal and were considered “less” than the white race.

Throughout the last couple of years, police brutality against minorities, especially African Americans, has become a notable topic in the media since the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
