The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) position on dependent personality disorder is to help clients to alter their relationship with negative thoughts and feelings that are taking over their lives. ACT presupposes that the normal psychological processes of the mind are frequently destructive, and create psychological suffering for all clients. This therapy opposes 'experiential avoidance.' The endeavor is to avoid or remove unwanted unpleasant thoughts and feelings and to offer a long-term solution to future health and happiness. This therapy does not a specific set of techniques, but there are six core processes utilized to establish psychological flexibility. Each of these areas are conceived as a positive psychological skill.
